Rwanda's Volcanoes and Akagera: Two Distinct Safaris
Rwanda's compact size makes it possible to experience remarkably different landscapes in one trip. Volcanoes National Park is known for guided mountain gorilla trekking in the Virunga foothills, while Akagera National Park offers savannah, wetlands and lakes in the east.
A gorilla trek needs a confirmed permit for a specific date. The hike can be strenuous and takes place at altitude, so check current park requirements, health guidance, fitness expectations and permit availability before fixing the rest of your travel plans.
Akagera provides a different pace, with game drives across lowland habitats and lake country. Sightings depend on wildlife and conditions; allow time for the landscape rather than expecting a guaranteed checklist.
Although Rwanda is compact, road journeys still take time. Plan transfers between Kigali, the northwest and Akagera with realistic breaks, and confirm current accommodation and entry arrangements.
Combining the two parks gives a rewarding contrast between rainforest and savannah. A few extra nights make it easier to enjoy each place without turning the trip into a sequence of long drives.
